It’s been a while since we have heard from Ben Neill, the crazy trumpet turned electronica artist. His last album was 1998’s Goldbug and since then he has actually been busy making music for Volkswagen campaigns. So in essence, it probably hasn’t been as long as you thought since you heard from Ben. So guess what Automotive consists of? The ad scores that Neill has been working on only they are extended out into a longer version. They are really funky and groovy and work good as background music. Some tracks he has even taken a remix approach to so the songs are almost unrecognizable. There are 10 tracks on Automotive but it’s the sort of album that goes on in the background and your attention is not immediately drawn to it. This means that you are pressing play again once the album is over. Ben Neill’s music used to have the occasional annoying track on it (something to do with his mutantrumpet) but Automotive is a very clean and impressive album. Downtempo fans will find a gem in Ben’s Automotive album even though it’s a little more upbeat.
