I had only heard of Cibelle from the release from the late Suba, one of the most underrated Brazilian artists of our time. She was featured on Suba's Sao Paulo Confessions, one of the best albums that has ever come out of Brazil. Cibelle is a Brazilian diva whose music ventures down classic bossa nova paths, veering off into experimental electronica, samba, jazz, and so much more. Chris Harrison and Pete Norris are responsible for the sound on her debut, the same people that brought us Morcheeba. The lead off track, "Deixa" gives you a good idea what to expect for the rest of the album. Cibelle has a sexy and sultry voice. The collection of musicians that she brought together are the best of the best of today's Brazilian musicians. But it is indeed her voice that holds everything together here. She has a similar voice to her fellow country lady, Bebel Gilberto. It might just be the same bossa nova overtones that bring out that comparison but both are worthy vocalists. Cibelle provides us with a great debut album. It could use a little work in a few places but hopefully Apollo 9, one of the main producers involved, will figure out the finer details of bringing out this fine voice.
