As you have probably guessed, Appleseed Cast is one of my favorite bands going right now. Their Low Level Owl double disc was on my favorite albums of the year a couple of years ago and Two Conversations, their proper follow-up has been highly anticipated by fans. In 2002 the guys decided to leave their home of Deep Elm and sign to the fast rising Tiger Style. Where Low Level Owl was a very intense studio experimentation, Two Conversations is back to about the time of Mare Vitalis but not quite. The Appleseed Cast have a knack for writing such melancholic tracks that nothing else seems to matter. They learned with the experimentation of Low Level Owl how important arrangement and production is and learned to do it well. Have a listen to the lilting album closer "A Dream For Us", that indeed sounds like a dream, coming in and out of focus. It is a beautiful song. Tracks rarely get into the "rock" side of things. I think the closest that they get to an upbeat track is "Hanging Marionette" but it still is fairly mellow. "Ice Heavy Branches" manages to evoke a feeling of winter quite easily. Melody is present on every song and all the notes seem to go hand in hand with each other, like if one was to falter the entire song would be destroyed. The songs are gentle but very intricate. Chris Criski's voice is growing into something that people will stand up and recognize. Two Conversations is an accomplishment after the amazing Low Level Owl. Now I need to see Appleseed Cast in a live setting and my life will be better.
