Goodbye Flatland marks a very interesting time for 54-40. It is their return to the indie world after being on both Warner/Reprise and Sony Music for the past couple decades. 54-40's decision was based on the want to be more free in what they do. When their Sony contract was up they had offers from pretty much every record label in Canada but they turned them down to release Goodbye Flatland themselves. The reason that this Vancouver based band has stood the test of the time is diversity. Even just within one album you can hear many different influences and that is indeed true of Goodbye Flatland. While the band has never really been a chart topper, they have garnered a couple hits from every album that they have released. Now that they have dropped the big label, they have room to make a little more cash, provided that they can pull off the usual two singles off of their albums. The band chose to go with the production talents of Warne Livesey who has successes with The The, Midnight Oil and The Matthew Good Band. This was a wise choice making Goodbye Flatland one of the brightest mixed 54-40 albums in a few years. The songs are very complicated once you dive past the surface making repeat listens essential. "Animal In Pain" is one of the early single attempts and it's probably one of the heaviest tracks 54-40 have ever attempted. Neil almost sounds strained at some of the notes. Stretching out as always. As for the rest of the album, there are some great harmonies, as always, and I couldn't even guess at any of the other singles. They all have potential. Steady as she goes.
