Starflyer 59 is one of the longest running indie rock bands going and one of the first bands ever on Tooth and Nail. Indeed, the band has been around in some form or another for over a decade now and Old marks their brand new album. They have been on a bit of a high note for the last couple of albums and Old is quite a bit along the lines of Leave Here A Stranger. They have taken some cues from bands like Mercury Rev, learning to dwell in darkness but always have a ray of light shining through. Starflyer 59 manages to evoke a dark overtone but somehow keep it sunny. I keep hearing other band's influences in this band but somehow, with the longevity of Starflyer 59, I can't help but think that it may be the other way around. Tooth and Nail seems like a strange home for these guys too. They don't have any punk attitude whatsoever. Instead they keep shoegazing style rock alive and actually seeming fresh. The arrangements are lush and full. Guitars are the key instruments and Jason Martin's vocals are a perfect fit. Old is actually one of the finer releases I have heard this year. It takes a couple of listens to get into but after 3-4 listens you have melodies stuck permanently in your head. Old will stick around for a while just like Starflyer 59.
