On the surface, The Books looks like it would be a fairly run-of-the-mill project. A guitar player and a violin player get together and collaborate. Let's throw in a huge sample library and see what we get. Still sounds like it would typically be fairly boring but Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong have created a masterpiece with Thought For Food. If you relish standard song structure then you should stop reading here because The Books are out in left field, doing whatever the hell they feel like. The music is very minimalistic for the most part ("Contempt") but sometimes they build up into large masses of noise. Some tracks even come out in sheer beauty like "Motherless Bastard" that has a prominent violin line in it as well as some banjo picking. Some tracks are very upbeat like "Mikey Bass", which cruises along very nicely, ricocheting from left to right in a mad sample rage. Some people will take this album and put it on a pedestal, while others will lower it to the ground and stomp on it. You know you are onto something when you can create such a diverse reaction to your music. Good work Books!
