Death In Vegas' Steve Hellier and Richard Fearless have come up with a beautiful compilation. Well, that's what it feels like anyway with all the guest artists on Scorpio Rising. Just to name check the guests on this album: Dot Allison, Liam Gallagher, Paul Weller, Hope Sandoval, Adult's Nicola Kuperus and Woodbine's Susan Dillane. Pretty impressive for an album that's supposed to be a Death In Vegas soundtrack. And even more diverse on Scorpio Rising is the song selection. It ranges from full on electronica, to torch songs (Sandoval's "Killing Smile"), to classic Brit Pop with Weller's version of Gene Clark's "So You Say You Lost Your Baby". With the title track, Death In Vegas have created the best Oasis track that Oasis never did. "Scorpio Rising" proves that it is arrangement and production that really makes a song. Dot Allison's angelic voice lends itself nicely to "Diving Horse", a mellow and serene track. Where do you fit in a duo that is this diverse? I'm placing my bets on "producer". That's exactly what these guys do so well. I wouldn't be surprised if any of the artists that Hellier and Fearless work with would ask them to produce their next album. This is a duo that keeps thinking ahead and doesn't let stereotypes get in the way.
