This is one of the more mellow compilations in the Emo Diaries series. All the songs on Sad Songs Remind Me are unreleased and most of them are from unsigned artists. This shows a dedication to independent music allowing artists like The Paper Champions and So Sad Althea to get some exposure and hopefully end up making some contacts in the industry. Some of the groups that really stood out on this edition of Emo Diaries are Iamuse and their contribution "As The Summer Pass Us By". The singer's voice is a lazy style that goes nicely with the lackadaisical music that backs it up. And to wake you up, this song is followed up by The Local Art and a song entitled "Karenaihana", which sounds like it's in some different language. I would assume Japanese because that's where The Local Art is from. Great song. Another treat for me was the low-key "Big Cloud, Big Sky" by Milton Mapes. It lingers on for over 7 minutes but it is so hypnotic that it makes it drift by. Sad Songs Remind Me is a little more mellow than what I am used to on the Emo Diaries series. There are no big time rockers. Even their own artist, Settlefish, provides a fairly light hearted track. Probably the most aggressive track on the compilation is Avec's "The Last Injection". These are all good songs showing that the underground is teeming with great bands just waiting for their chance to hit the world. Thanks again Deep Elm.
