Joe Mannix grew up in Northport, Long Island listening to an older brother's record collection consisting of The Beach Boys, Jim Croce, Elton John, and Steely Dan. These influences had a strong effect on Joe. He was in a punk pop band called Oral Groove but deep inside Mannix really wanted to focus on singer/songwriter style music. Now he has the option of performing solo if the venue is suitable or bringing along his trio. White Flag is his debut album, originally released himself but recently Bongo Beat out of Vancouver caught wind of this band and reissued the album internationally. With a little more meat behind him now, his folk style music will undoubtedly make the rounds even faster. While Joe leans a little more towards pop than tried and true folk music, it still shows a blossoming songwriter that will make waves in the underground. One of my favorite tracks is the Caribbean tinged "Port Aransas" that sounds a lot like Brent Tyler's guitar and vocal style. Mannix is a great Harmonica player as well. This is showcased on a number of songs. It's always great when a talented songwriter gets noticed and hopefully White Flag will allow Joe Mannix that chance.
