Richard Buckner is one of those singer/songwriter types that you either love or hate. This review leans to the love side of the equation, as I have been a fan ever since I first heard Bloomed many years ago. Impasse marks the first all original material for Buckner since 1998's Since. It is a move to a bit of a brighter territory as well. The music is a little fuller and not near as dark as some of his previous releases. This may be a direct result of Richard taking over all instruments except drums, provided by his wife Penny Jo. And the songwriting is impeccable with not one bad song on the album. It seems that Richard has decided to go for an even cleaner production on Impasse as well. Although the arrangements are simple, they lend themselves very nicely to the songs themselves, bringing out Richard's voice front and center. My favorite track, "Grace-I'd-Said-I'd-Known" ranks up there with "Gauzy Dress In The Sun". There are too many highlights on Impasse to mention. Any roots music fan will find that Buckner has indeed come to his own with this album.
