Sixteen Horsepower fans don't have to worry about depth of material that the band has to offer. In fact, Olden is a collection of songs from 1993 and 1994 that have previously been unreleased. The band made waves with last years Folklore and in order to carry on the momentum they have decided to release these sessions to their rabid fans. Olden has more appeal to it than just for rabid fans too. If you haven't heard of Sixteen Horsepower and you enjoy alt.country or roots music then you need to seek out this band. It is a group led by David Eugene Edwards, a man with a dedicated focus in his roots music. The album starts out with the Night Owl Sessions recorded in Denver in 1993. Six eerily disturbing songs float by before you even really grasp the subject matter at hand. Next up are another six tracks recorded at the Kerr Macy Studio in Denver, 1994. The two sessions go hand in hand and there is nary a divider between the two. They could have been the same sessions for all we know. The album finishes off with six live tracks recorded at the Mercury Cafe, also in Denver, CO. Fans may recognize some of these tracks but for the most, they will be new. When a band releases early efforts like this you understand that the talent has been around for a long time and not just newfound. Sixteen Horsepower is a band that has stood the test of time as they approach their decade mark.
