The infamous threesome known as Yo La Tengo continues their illustrious career of experimental pop music. This next chapter is called Summer Sun and it is one of their most prolific efforts to date. This means that Summer Sun takes a couple more listens than their past albums to get into. This is a good thing; a Yo La Tengo album that requires work on the listener's part. It is almost like Ira and his crew have taken a different path but the scenery is somewhat similar. There are more jazz elements on this album than their past albums but there is the familiar pop track like "Season of the Shark", a return to form for the group. There is indeed more sophistication developing on most of the songs though. The Georgia Hubley sung, "Today Is The Day" is a gentle masterpiece that shines as one of the albums most melancholic pieces. The band still experiments with sounds and mellow instrument arrangements that seep into your conscience. It is always a pleasure to listen to a band that is on top of its game. It's hard to write albums after your critically acclaimed "best album of their career" (I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One) but Summer Sun shows that Yo La Tengo still possess a world of music that they have just begun to top.
