Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People
Happy Songs For Happy People. Oh, Mogwai, you guys are so funny. For those of you not familiar with the bleak soundscapes that Mogwai writes you may wonder what I'm talking about. Mogwai is a Scottish band, primarily instrumental and have been putting amazing albums on the market for about 6 years, starting with the amazing Young Team CD in 1997. Their music is mellow at the best of times and builds to loud noisy wankfests (occasionally) and then dwindle down into nothingness. Happy Songs is no different in that the songs are exceptional. The first two tracks go by and there is nothing happy about them. They feel like they are depressing and all in minor keys. It is not until we get to number 3, "Kids Will Be Skeletons" that the promise of Happy Songs come into play. "Killing All The Flies" is a fairly positive song as well. I will admit that Happy Songs is a bit more sunny than Mogwai's past offerings. My mistake with Mogwai - I really got into Young Team and decided that I wouldn't buy any more of their albums, thinking that it would spoil the effect of Young Team. I now have all their offerings and each one gets better and better. Happy Songs For Happy People is indeed their best offering to date and I can't see myself living without it.
