Ahh, Torch Songs - You know, the one's about heartache and heartbreak? It seems like they never really go out of style though. They are songs that hit everyone in different ways but pretty much everyone has a place in their heart for a sultry ballad about breaking up with a lover. It seems like it's mostly women that get all emotional about that sort of thing so it tends to be them that sing about it. Elvis Costello makes an appearance on Roy Nathanson's "Fire Suite 1" along with Cyrus Chesnutt as one of the only men on this compilation. Torch shows you where downtempo and chill music got their influences from, the jazz ballad. It seems that the two go hand in hand and even though these songs are a little more modern, there are still all the jazz elements to them. Check out Cassandra Wilson's amazing rendition of Neil Young's "Harvest Moon". This is the way you do it. A lot of Six Degrees artists are here like Sylk 130, Hawke, and a new signing, Shrift. This is a great album to put on late at night, either by yourself or with someone special. Sure they are heartbreak songs but there is always romance involved. No cheese here, only good quality Torch songs.
