Sonic Unyon has taken on this interesting split effort. Toshack Highway is actually Adam Franklin of Swervedriver fame's new project. This split album takes an EP of both Toshack Highway and Sianspheric to combine them into one package. I will start with Magnetic Morning, Franklin's offering. I must admit that this is the first I have heard Toshack Highway. It seems like quite a departure from Swervedriver. Magnetic Morning is mostly an acoustic affair and very beautiful I might add. Adam has really turned down the volume and gone for melody over distorted guitars. It's a welcome change and I will look out for any of their future offerings. The Sianspheric effort, Aspirin Age, is a typical effort by these slo-core Canadians. I would even say that these five tracks are a little lack-luster in their delivery. The EP starts out with the very quiet "Song For" that puts the listener in the mood for the rest of the album. "Beneath The Ocean Floor" sounds exactly like that although it is up a notch from the opener. By "No Space" I was indeed fast asleep. "This All Happened" picks things up considerably using, ironically, a Swervedriver style of arrangement. It is one of the best tracks on the album too. This is one of the weakest efforts I have heard from Sianspheric, usually fairly impressive. Toshack Highway wins this contest hands down. 4.5 for Toshack Highway and 2.5 for Sianspheric.
