It's taken a while but The Essex Green has finally released their sophomore album. I was introduced to them with their Fabulous Day EP and knew that this album would be a sweet pop affair. The band mixes a power-pop sound with a 60's psychedelic sound. It's not like it hasn't been done yet but somehow it always sounds refreshing when a band does it right. The dissolved Elephant 6 collective seems to keep popping up lately and Essex Green is no different. Their sound is very distinct and listeners are treated to a dual vocalist approach with both Sasha Bell and Chris Ziter taking turns and backing each other up. Sasha's tracks seem to stick out a little more than Chris'. Her voice is quite unique, possessing an almost country quality to it. Have a listen to "The Late Great Cassiopia", one of the albums more upbeat tracks. They wear their vintage influences very well on this track. Harmonies are abound and consistent throughout the entire album and it's one where Sasha and Chris sound completely at home with one another. The Long Goodbye is a great album and one of the Essex Green's most consistent. This is a great place to start to enter their world.
