When I first heard about this collaboration I was pretty excited thinking about Matthew Sweet sharing duties with one hit wonders like Pete Droge and Shawn Mullins. It's moments like these that sometimes brings out the best in songwriters and musicians. History has seen Crosby, Stills and Nash as well as The Traveling Wilburys putting out consistent material. While The Thorns have gotten some fairly mixed reviews I would like to offer some consolation to the band. This album really grows on you. Not only do they cover The Jayhawks "Blue" from and album I hated originally but they remind me a lot of the harmonies that the Jayhawks are capable. Pete and Shawn may be riding on Matthew Sweet's consistency here but it's really the harmonies that make the Thorns. They all get writing credits on all the songs but there are more songs that sound like Sweet compositions here than anything else. There are songs here that ooze of CSN like "Think It Over" but on "Thorns" they really sound unique. It's a pop track that bounces along very nicely. The only complaint I have is that the songs seem to be missing that hook that gets the listener wrapped right into the song. The polish is there on the final product but the songwriting almost needs another look. I will be interested to see where the individual artists go after this experience.
