Firewater - The Man On The Burning Tightrope
Tod A is back with his Firewater band. Firewater is a band that pretty much defies categorization as they skirt into all sorts of strange territories. With their latest contribution, The Man On The Burning Tightrope, they delve into circus style music, ala Tom Waits. Firewater travel down a very eclectic path, verging on klezmer music on "Dark Days Indeed". There are times when they remind me of the space-pop of Spacehog ("Secret") and times when they sound like Smashmouth ("Too Much (Is Never Enough)") with the horns and such. Firewater seems to have a pretty positive outlook and it shows in their music. It's all upbeat and fun. Some say that a Firewater is like a twisted nightmare but I think of their music more as a dream with all sorts of twisted realities going on. Nothing really scary here. Over all, Tightrope is one of Firewater's most adventurous efforts yet. There is just so much going on that a listener will never get bored. Quite the opposite, it may leave a listener a little confused as to where the band is going. Not the most solid work but fans should be pleased.
