C'est Mortel is a post-rock band that comes via the Athens GA area. They play a brand of instrumental rock not unlike Slint. Sure, you're thinking that Slint has been done by so many bands but C'est Mortel is quite unique and do have something to offer the post-Slint music world. The band is made up by members of another band called Jet By Day, Tom Naumann and Mason Brown. C'est Mortel is rounded out by other Georgia based musicians Devin Brown, Brett Griffin, and David Specht. The compositions on this album are very epic in nature. In fact, the album is basically broken down into two halves: the first called "Your Misfortune Is Our Mirth" spanning tracks 1-3 and "Magnum Opus" spanning 4-7. There are the odd vocals thrown in for good measure but don't expect many. The band is very creative and love to get on a good riff and go with it. Sometimes it comes off repetitive but for the most part it really works and keeps things interesting. When they start doing the gratuitous guitar wanking I find it to get a bit tiresome, but I'm like that anyway. If you see this album in your record store, have a listen. You should be able to tell if this will be your bag within a couple minutes.
