I'm not a huge jazz fan but I always have time for a good piano based trio. This could be the lack of effort that I put into my piano lessons as a child, The Simon Fisk Trio takes Simon's bass lead and incorporates the fabulous playing of Chris Gestrin (piano, and obviously took his lessons seriously) and Tom Foster (drums). They have been wowing audiences for over six years now. Fisk, himself is a protege of none other than Gary Peacock from the Keith Jarrett Trio. You will find their bass styles similar. I found Trainwrecks to be somewhat similar to that of the Brad Meldau trio. It's mostly the piano playing that stands out, I found. The bass is a vital instrument in the mix though and Fisk really shines when it comes to him being featured. He has made quite a name touring with much lauded Michael Kaeshammer and has been getting quite a bit of attention this way. Now it's time for him to take his Trio to a new level. There is no reason why this album shouldn't belong on Verve or Blue Note. It's every bit as good as anything they are currently offering.
