Freya - As The Last Light Drains
There was a bit of a void when Earth Crisis decided to call it quits but now that 3 of the Earth Crisis boys are back with Freya, fans can rest easy once again. Although Karl, Bulldog and Eric have taken a slightly different turn with regards to the bands sound, you can still feel some of the old style poking through at times. As Earth Crisis, these guys did the impossible, selling over 300,000 copies of their albums all over the world. One of the big changes with Freya is a lot more melody being added to the mix. The heaviness is still the focus but the band doesn't mind actual singing on tracks like "Resuscitate", one of my favorites. Karl still does the majority of the vocal work but new recruit Darien Lizotte is the voice you hear doing the melodic singing parts. It works well and it seems a little more heartfelt than some of the other dual vocalist hardcore bands out there. Once they realize that they have a winning combination of vocalists, Freya will attempt to utilize it a little more. As The Last Light Drains is as great a debut as any hardcore band could ask for but you have to remember that three of these guys have been playing together for over a decade. They know how to compliment each other.
