It took me a few listens to be able to approach this Tricky review. I'm still not totally sold on Vulnerable but I can start to see where some Tricky, and trip-hop fans for that matter, may find some merits in his fourth proper full-length album. On Vulnerable, Tricky trades in his old chanteuse for the new Italian version in Constanza Francavilla. The problem I found is that he relies a little too much on her vocals. Her vocals are fairly monotone and what Tricky needs is someone to add depth to his extremely monotone voice. He has always thought that the public sees him as only capable of making really dark music. That's why he has titled this album Vulnerable. There are straight ahead pop tracks (with his dark vocals) like the lead off single "Anti-Matter". It almost sounds as if it were a Garbage tune. He follows "Anti-Matter" up with one of the catchiest tracks called "Ice Pick". It's a fast and furious track and the best one with Constanza singing. Listening to "How High", one of the darkest songs on the album, you wonder just how long Tricky can keep this pop pose going. I don't think we have seen the last of Tricky. Vulnerable may lose some fans but those willing to take some time with the new Tricky may be swayed to get into it. I can see some of these tracks used for movie soundtracks.
