Grandaddy - Sumday
Note to self: if you want to start a band and become stupidly popular on the college charts, follow the footsteps of Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and just added, Grandaddy. Sumday is the highly anticipated follow-up to their amazing Sophtware Slump. Sumday is the case of a band that you thought just put out the best album of their career (Sophtware) and they manage to top it (or equal it). I'm sure many will compare this to the Flaming Lips recent album, where they pretty much did the impossible. I find that Sumday is a little more consistent than Sophtware Slump. It's a solid album that Grandaddy, I'm sure, is confident about and that fans should drool over. I still think it's funny when a guy like Jason Lytle, wearing his hick farmers cap, makes some of the best college rock to be found. While the music stays fairly mellow, tracks like the opening "Now It's On" gets going at a pretty good pace. The music is a sweeping as recent Mercury Rev albums without being so light and fluffy. Consider Grandaddy a more manly Mercury Rev. They both fit into the same category as The Flaming Lips and all three might be a great line-up to see live. There is a spacey feel to Sumday but not so much as their previous album. My advice to Grandaddy though, you are going to have to make some significant changes on your next album to avoid the fan boredom syndrome. "Stray Dog and the Chocolate Shake" take my vote for both best song and best song title.
