Quango's next move was to mix African music and electronic beats. While not the most original idea to arise in the music world it is one that hasn't been hammered to death. African drum beats and electronic drum beats seem to compliment one another and Afrotech is one showcase of this. The album opens up with Nahawa Doumbia and a dub mix of "Yankaw". This sets the pace for the album. A song that is deeply rooted in the African culture yet is treated with a nice accompanying drum beat. Palm's own Gigi is up next with a mix of her "Gudfella". One of Fela Kuti's friends, Tony Allen contributes a track called "Ariya". Six Degree's recording artist, Issa Bagayogo is here with his "Banani" track. Dennis Ferrer's "Funu" is a great display of guitar work. Baaba Maal is of course included with a remix of "Falaye Fannaan". I felt that this song was overworked and a lot of Baaba's own musicianship falls to the wayside. While Quango's music is very high quality, they need to look to fellow world music label, Putumayo for packaging tips. Putumayo is very extensive on write-ups for each of the contributing artists whereas Quango just lists the artists with no information. A lot of times, this may be the only time you come across one of these artists and it would be nice to get as much information as you can on them. Music is great, package needs work.
