Yeah, so if you haven't heard of ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail Of Dead after last year's amazing Source Tags & Codes then you really aren't keeping an ear to the underground world. They pretty much cleaned up on Year End best lists (oops, forgot to put it on mine, but that's a different story). What better way to rake in money, I mean, please fans than with a 5-song EP to fill in the wait until their next full-length. Me, not being the biggest Trail of Dead fan, found The Secret of Elena's Tomb to be an even more exhilarating ride than their last years effort. If "Intelligence" was on Source Codes, it may have made my list. It's the EP closer and one of the best progressive rock tracks ever. It builds on a very quiet opening into a very interesting mix of electro-bleeps and heavily distorted guitars. The album opens up with the heavy hitting "Mach Schau" that is just screaming to be the background for a car chase scene in a movie. "All Saints Day" is standard fare but for these Austin-based musicians standard fare is still many notches above the rest. "Counting Off The Days" is the ballad of Elena's Tomb and it is very beautiful no matter what way you look at it. This is every bit as essential as Source Codes.
