Brassy is more or less a funk band for the new millennium. Seriously, if you don't end up bobbing your head to a track like the title track or "So Long, Baby". There really isn't much to what Muffin Spencer is doing here except taking a funky groove and building some lyrics around it. The album kicks off with "Hit 'Em Hard", a Beastie Boys style track that is phat and heavy. It's a great way to get things rolling. "1-0-0" is the debut single off of Gettin Wise but I would like to think that there are even better tracks on the album than that. "Mine" reminds me a little of that No Doubt song "Keep On Dancing". There are many tracks on this sophomore album that Brassy is sure to be asked for movie soundtracks. They are funky and heavy enough to fit into the next Guy Ritchie movie. Like I said, there is nothing totally mindblowing here, but there is enough to get your ass in gear. You might take Brassy as a replacement for Luscious Jackson. There is also a bonus on Gettin Wise for the hardcore fan. Brassy had a single called "Play Some D" that eventually got picked up by Motorola for a TV commercial. This hard to find track is tacked on the end and it's super funky.
