When you think of bands from Oklahoma, you immediately think of the brilliant Flaming Lips. That was until now. The state is actually shared with one other band called Starlight Mints and while these guys haven't quite got the time in like The Lips they are bound to make a name for themselves. Built On Squares is the sophomore album and quite an impressive one as well. There are some similarities to The Flaming Lips but for the most part Starlight Mints is even more quirky than their fellow state-mates. You might even say that Starlight Mints are even more pop. A closer comparison may be the Pixies or Canada's own Rheostatics. It's due to the forward thinking songwriting that Allan Vest is capable of. The band obviously takes many influences in and manipulates them beyond recognition. On "Brass Digger" I hear a bit of Pavement mixed with the Rheostatics. The trumpets on this song work really well. The quirkiness is evened out by some brilliant arrangements. Starlight Mints are a fun band with talent in tow, which means that they will most likely go over the general publics head. Built On Squares will find a home on college charts this year.
