Rex - C
Rex was one of the finest bands to endeavor down the path of slow-core. Next to Low, the reigning champs, Rex was able to get a listener interested in their mellow songs that were a little more upbeat than some of their luminaries. In fact, this style was full of cross-genre member trading and collaborations. Rex drummer Doug Scharin was sharing his duties with another ground-breaking although sleepy Codeine. Rex collaborated with bands like Red Red Meat as well as branching off to do their own projects. C was their shining moment in their three full-length album career. There was so much depth to this album that they almost lost the slow-core moniker. It's the deep valley's in the music that still warrant the bands status. There are some super complicated guitar pieces in amongst the slow paced music that shine and make Rex a little different than some of the other bands. There are times when this album reminds me of a very mellow Meat Puppets, like on "All Waves" with it's intricate guitar pieces and the Curtis Harvey's great voice. They even went so far as to include some string arrangements. I believe it was touring for this album that they incorporated the strings into their live performances as well. C is an album that inspired many bands to do similar things but none ever came close to being as brilliant as Rex and this album.
