Silver Lake is Vic Chesnutt's proper follow-up to 1998's brilliant The Salesman and Bernadette. You see, in 2000 he released a collaboration with Jack Logan called Merriment and a year later was a collection of rarities and outtakes. He also has a new label in tow as well with the support of New West Records. Silver Lake may be considered by many to be Vic's finest accomplishments yet. The arrangements are earnest but very full in the same breath. The track "2nd Floor" is a perfect example of this. It is a song that builds and builds but never gets out of hand. But Chesnutt is most at home with his intimate style of singer/songwriter music and his clever wordplay. Producer Mark Howard seems to have instantly figured out what sort of engineering Silver Lake needed. I would venture so far as to say that it's a perfect fit with the music. Vic's voice is in it's finest form here leaving out a lot of the breaking a cracking up that plagued some of his other releases. Vic Chesnutt will be around for many years to come. He is a creative genius in his own right, a modern day Bob Dylan.
