The events of September 11, 2001 affected more than just the political landscape. There were numerous bands and artists that rethought what they were doing. Jimmy Eat World quickly changing their album title from Bleed American to a self-titled release. The Coup was affected similarly with their original cover art-work for Party Music. It had a picture of the twin towers being blown up. Before it hit the presses they quickly changed it to a flaming martini. The Coup, while hiding behind the cover of a hip hop party band, is indeed a political band with many clear messages like "5 Million Ways To Kill A C.E.O." and "Ghetto Manifesto". They take a lesson from those that came before them in engaging the booty first then blast them with the political message. The songs are super-catchy with very cool samples being brought out into the forefront. Have a listen to the smooth "Wear Clean Draws" encouraging you to wear clean draw(er)s everyday. Fun times but those times are sandwiched by tracks like "Get Up" with their heavy messages ("Turn the system upside down"). The Coup can easily come off as party music but once you peel off the funky rhythms and smooth rhymes, they lyrics are a slap in the face.
