This is one of those self-discoveries that I feel pretty good about. I was watching a snowboarding video and was really impressed by this one track that stood out in one scene. I checked out the credits and it was a band I had never heard of called Bugs In Amber. I took down their name and checked out their nice website, emailed them, and asked them if they could get me a copy of their latest album for review. Sure enough Lessons of Honorable Mention ended up in my mailbox about two weeks later. I am actually quite blown away that a band with this much talent is floating around without any label support whatsoever. They sort of remind me of a Radiohead around the time of the Bends but with even more depth. According to their website, Bugs In Amber started out as a five piece acoustic outfit in 1997 but shed the quietness in favor of a louder, more plugged in sound. Sonny Votalato's voice is a very unique sounding voice and works very good with their complex arrangements. I would say that the band could fit into an emo category but there is just too much to their arrangements. If you are a prominent indie label A&R rep, I suggest that you venture over to their website and check out what they have to offer. It's a very fresh sound that has so much potential.
