After the critical success of Blackwater Park Opeth decided to go back to the studio and follow it up with not one, but two albums. Deliverance was the first of the two and they dropped it in 2002 to adoring fans. It was a testament to how heavy these Swedes could be. It won them the 2003 Swedish Grammy Award for Best Rock/Metal act. Damnation on the other hand is a testament to how gentle these boys can play and how masterful they actually are. If you have been scared off from Opeth because of how heavy they are then you have to check out Damnation. This is a startlingly mellow album for these guys. There is even some classical guitar style on the album as well as some Santana style playing on tracks like "Ending Credits". Some fans may be left scratching their heads but most of their fans are open to this progressive band and anything they do is fine with them. Damnation is anything but a metal or death metal album. It's more a showcase of the actual songwriting that Mikael Akerfeldt is capable of. Think of it more as an Opeth extension that shows another side of the pulverizing metal band has. Damnation should not be thought of as a typical Opeth album but an escape from the heavier side.
