Sven Zalac and Matthias Freund have been meddling in music for many years. In fact in 1992 they got a group together to play some hard grunge music. They were into the hard and heavy stuff until they went to a Depeche Mode concert and Sven Vath opened the show. It was the first exposure they had ever had to non-mainstream techno music and they instantly fell in love with it. Tubed has been in the making ever since. There is a lot of organic beats that happen on Codec & Flexor's debut album but their vocals are entertaining. They mix a Ministry style vocal on some tracks ("Alert") with Front 242 sort of beat and production. On other tracks it's like Nitzer Ebb all over again. I would say that if Codec & Flexor released Tubed 10 years ago this album would have been huge. Now, it's a retro album that shows no real improvements or contributions to the musical world. They need to go and rethink their ideas and try to come up with something a little more original.
