I am still amazed over the hype that fell upon New York rockers, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's after their mini-album was released a couple years ago. The ensuing fallout left them with an Interscope record contract and an army of fans. With a major label behind them, we stood waiting to see what sort of direction Karen O and her crew would head. With Fever To Tell about to hit the shelves I can honestly tell you that the direction looks good. Fever is a hot album (pun intended) and makes all the hype worthy. Karen's voice is something like I've never heard before. Nick Zinner's guitar playing fits into the garage rock territory that the Yeah Yeah Yeah's have been lumped into but he goes even further on tracks like the album opener "Rich". Their comparisons to The Strokes fall by the wayside with this album. Closer comparisons would be an even dirtier White Stripes or even Royal Trux. If Peaches had a voice as cool as Karen O's we would be in trouble. Fever To Tell is a dirty album with many dirty highlights. It's hard to pull favorites from the album but one track that really stands out is "Black Tongue". It's a dose of punk rock with a very talented lead singer leading the way. I think the legion of fans that YYY's have acquired along the way will be overly impressed with their proper full-length debut. Watch for this one to show up on some Top 10 lists at the end of the year.
