Mouse on Mars is a German electronic duo that has been paving the way for many like-minded artists to follow. Not to be confused with the modest rodent, Mouse On Mars is the electronica answer to Tortoise (some say). The album title is a play on Post Rock, an early moniker that the type of electronic music this duo composed. Obviously post-rock went on to mean other things and this type of music has affectionately been called IDM (Intelligent Dance Music). Mouse On Mars recorded 3 albums and 5 EPs for Too Pure. Rost Pocks is a collection of all their EP work they did for the label. While the whole premise sounds a little contrived, the music here is some of Mouse On Mars' best music to date. It seemed like the group would focus more on their material when they had less on the plate. The difference with MoM and other like-minded musicians was that MoM tended to fill up the space a little more. Their songs sound like a whole composition rather than a fleeting glimpse. Tracks like "Cache Coeur Naif" with vocals from Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier (she's on a couple of the included tracks) prove that Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner think a little more about the song structure. Rost Pocks is a great place to get introduced to a phenomenal electronic group.
