I don’t understand why Toronto based Dan Snaith (AKA: Manitoba) isn’t on Warp records. Start Breaking My Heart is an amazing display of electronic dexterity and creativity. There is as much merit in Manitoba’s debut album than that of Boards of Canada. With that being said, let’s take a closer look at why this album is so damn interesting. Sure it’s still all generic beats and samples but there are some artists that really know how to make those beats and samples connect. Dan is one of those people. There is not one generic sounding track on here. In fact it’s quite the opposite. Manitoba ends up sounding alive and full complete with a few instruments thrown in for good measure. Take the fine saxophone playing done in “Mammals vs. Reptiles� and you will realize what a fine musician Dan Snaith really is. Whether or not Warp will be smart enough to venture up to Toronto to scoop up Manitoba remains to be seen but don’t wait for that moment. Go out and track down Start Breaking My heart. You’ll be so glad that you did. IDM at it’s finest.
