Take 2. Jon Brooks is releasing his sophomore album as King Of Woolworths and has done a fine job at it. You may remember on Ming Star that the King was pretty much a man into soundscapes. On L'illustration Musicale he is really up to more of the same but he is growing alongside as an apt producer and arranger. He has kept himself busy in the meantime, releasing an EP called Dew Point as well as remixing for Saint Etienne and Ladytron. Apparently John has been into French music and came across a label by the same name as this album. He let that album influence him in the making of L'illustration. The music doesn't resemble French music per say but the influence is there. Take the vocal "Evelsong" for instance. You can tell where John is going with the sprawling beats and the beautiful female vocal track. The album moves into a more electro state with "123 (Brillo's Beat)" and it bops along nicely. While this King of Woolworths album does have some similarities to Ming Star, it does move in a positive direction and will please fans of the former album. Dot Allison appears on "Sell Me Back My Soul" and Emma Pollack from the Delgados appears on "Nuada".
