The Thermals are more of a collaborative effort than an actual band. You may call it a supergroup but the chances are that The Thermals will get more press than any of the other bands these musicians are associated with. The Thermals are made up of Hutch Harris (Hutch & Kathy), Kathy Foster (Hutch & Kathy and All-Girl Summer Fun Band), Jordan Hudson (Operacycle) and Ben Barnett (Kind Of Like Spitting) who provides the vocals. They decide to do the Guided By Voices thing and do a lo-fi recording with songs that range around 2 minutes long. The thing with The Thermals is that they tend to be a little more in your face than Guided By Voices. If they chose to have a more solid production they would blow GBV away. Ben Barnett, who is known for his prolific musical output, sounds better than ever singing for the Thermals. Their music is catchy and brash in the same song. Have a listen to their "No Culture Icons" (available on an EP from Sub Pop) and tell me that The Thermals aren't catchy. If you are still skeptical then seek out the aforementioned EP. Otherwise, jump in with both feet. More Parts Per Million may ride out on top this year.
