The Postal Service is a bit of a funny story. Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello had met Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard while working on a Dntel track for This Is The Dream of Evan and Chan. They had so much fun and found the whole process to be effortless that they decided to collaborate further. The strange thing was that in order to fulfill the Postal Service requirements they resorted to the US postal service in order to get their ideas back and forth, hence the group's name. While Gibbard provides most of the vocals, they bring in independent artist Jen Wood and Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis for some assistance (or some diversity). Don't look for a Death Cab for Cutie sound on Give Up though. This album is more along the lines of Magnetic Fields with electronic beats and samples. Ben's voice is a perfect fit for The Postal Service's sound. The songs border on an 80's pop sound but Jimmy keeps the music in the here and now with his masterful production and different sampling skills. I wouldn't be surprised if we see another Postal Service offering in the future. This music is sweet and goes down smooth.

Certainly lives up to the hype. I'd echo the comment that there are some very similar elements to The Magnetic Fields, and with Ben Gibbard's vocals is an obvious listen for any Death Cab for Cutie fan. "Such Great Heights" opens with such beautiful lyrics that they'll give you goosebumps, and follow through with great music that'll make you repeat it over and over. "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" and "Brand New Colony" are the other standout tracks, the latter perfectly summing up the awkwardness of intruding into an ex-lover's life, the former another quirky, sweet little love song.

If there is such a thing as a perfect Electronic indie-rock record this would be it. The calaboration between Jimmy Tamborello and Ben Gibbard is a wet dream for any fan of Death Cab For Cutie or Dntel. They mesh perfectly together. With songs like "Nothing Better", "Such Great Heights", and "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" this album is chalked full of neverending high points. It is a must have for not only fans of their respective bands but for any fan interested in the genre. It shows the versatility in both artists in ways that they simply can not be shown in either of their bands. The vocals of Ben Gibbard go along perfectly with all of the electro genius that is Jimmy Tamborello. Also, with cameos from Rilo Kiley's vocalist Jenny Lewis it tends to keep you on the edge of your seat only wanting more. This is one of the few cds that you will just simply not get tired of after listening to it for a month straight. Each song has it's own individual edge and shows how perfect this can possibly get. They can certainly take their time producing another masterpiece because this one will last longer than it take for the cd to break. It even has a cover that gives the song a new meaning. Simply put this album is beautiful and a must have for anyone remotely interested in either of their original bands.
