Jazz resurgence? I can't say for sure but the group known as Baron Samedi E.S.Q. doesn't know any different. Ecstatic Soul Quintet is exactly what the 5-piece band from Vancouver BC deliver. It's a hot sound and it is more infectious with every listen. There isn't anyone named Baron Samedi in the band. In fact the members consist of Steven Balogh on bass (Capozzi Park), Shane Krause on baritone sax, Rod Navarro on percussion, Mark Neufeld on drums (also did the album's cool illustrations) and Chris Storrow on the mad organ. Indeed this album was recorded live with no overdubs. It was a set recorded at the Sugar Refinery before the doors opened to get a clean, uninterrupted sound. The recording quality is very good for a album of this nature. The music is heavy on the jazz influences but also incorporates a little of the Tortoise Chicago sound as well. 7 tracks drift by and they are all high quality. This is a very good recording that should fare Baron Samedi ESQ some recognition.
