The Morvern Callar Soundtrack is the first great soundtrack of 2003. I am probably one of the only people I know that has ever read this book and I am quite excited that Lynne Ramsay has chosen to make it into a movie. The soundtrack is a little more than just music inspired by the movie or background music from the film. This music is the central focus of the film. It is the mix tape that Morvern’s boyfriend left her before committing suicide. The music here is very diverse but it works really well together. It’s like a well thought out compilation that enters many different styles. The soundtrack starts out with Can’s “I Want More and moves seamlessly into an Aphex Twin track. There are contributions from Boards of Canada, Stereolab, The Velvet Underground (the oft overlooked “I’m Sticking With You), Broadcast, Can’s founding member Holger Czukay, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, and Ween (their brilliant “Japanese Cowboy). In my opinion, if the movie is half as good as this soundtrack then it’s going to be an underground hit.
