A year later and another album, it looks as though The White Stripes might be the great new rock hope. After last years suburb debut Jack and Meg have returned with another triumph of an album. The song writing has become more sophisticated but hasn't turned muso, as so many people into the blues decide to do. There is still that great punk ethos of great short songs and no overdrawn guitar solos. when a time when everyone is going for slick modern sounds The White Stripes are making records that sound like could have been made 40 years ago. Jack and Meg have mostly stuck with their initial formula of heavy blues guitar and pounding drums, but never on this album is there a dull moment. Moving through the album, it starts off with two great singles Hello Operator and You're Pretty Good Looking and then onto a variety of different styles. From the piano led Apple Blossom to the soulful I'm Gonna Pack It Up and even a cover of Death Letter by Son House De Stijl is an album packed with no duds or boring rewrites. with all the character less pap voices around its great to find a vocalist that pays homage to their heroes, and never do they rip them off. If you love Pussy Galore, The Pixies or Sebadoh then the De Stijl is necessary for your collection and it proves that old school rock 'N' roll isn't quite dead, no mater what Fred Durst would have believe.
