How can I possibly declare a 4 year old album (yes, it's only four years old) as a classic? What I look for when I declare an album a classic is not necessarily it's staying power (that would be The Bodyguard Soundtrack and Michael Jackson's Thriller) but their infuential abilities and originality. With Roots the band melded Brazillian tribal chants and rhythms with bottom heavy guitars and growls to come up with one of the most refreshing Metal releases of the 1990's. The album contains socio-political themes that get screamed out and then beaten in with the tribal drums. Don't believe me then just listen to 'Ratamahatta' and with lead singer screaming back vocals to reknowned world singer Carlinhos Brown. Shortly after this album Max left the band in search of his own thing with his band Soulfly. It's an angry affair but one that metal must stand up and acknowledge.
