The guys in Opeth probably never saw the praise coming when they dropped Blackwater Park, their fifth album and most brilliant to date. It was a very ambitious album that reaches far past the confines of what people consider prog-metal into an area worthy only of themselves. They raised the bar but are easily stepping over it with their new album, Deliverance. Opeth have created 6 tracks of pure metal genius, each track being an epic in itself. Every single track is a story and a journey unto itself. The vocals can range from mellow ballad-like to crushing death-metal. Guitars are the same. They coax you and then crush you. Time signatures are complicated but aren’t too crazy to drive away potential fans. The mellowest, most accessible track is “Fair Judgment, which trots along at a dark pace but the vocalist is crooning to the best of his ability. That track is followed up but a brief instrumental called “For Absent Friends that is very gentle in it’s delivery. After that, it’s business as usual with “Master’s Apprentices. If you really liked Blackwater Park, there is more of the same on Deliverance. Opeth has managed to solidify themselves as legends in the dark metal world.
