Let's get this out of the way. I am quite a big NIN fan. That of my chest I can devote my review to the truth about The Fragile. Trent Reznor felt he had enough material to make The Fragile a double disc set. I was kind of leery at first as that usually means a lot of low quality recordings. I listened to "Left" (name of disc 1) first and wasn't overly impressed. Some hard driving tracks and some duds. After some hesitation I listened to the "Right" disc and understood instantly. The first disc fit into perspective after having heard the whole set. It still has the great head bopping heaviness to it and yet they are built upon so much that you think the song is going to be overblown. Then instantly comes back to grab you before your lost. I really do believe Trent is a musical genuis.

This is the album I will always know NiN for, more so than The Downward Spiral or any other. It's the one where I think Reznor peaked as a creative musician, and really hit rock-bottom as far as inspiration goes. There's dirt and grime all over this album, and as it tries to be pretty, flashy and efficient, there's a balancing of ugly, dull and reserved. It seems to contradict itself along the path of it's 23 tracks. It makes for more of a 'spiral'ing than the album of that name. Every song latches onto your conscious, each an example of Reznor's masterful handling of a studio and all of it's toys. His knack at composition and songwriting is damn near unmatched in modern rock music. The Fragile is purely, simply, the best thing Nine Inch Nails ever could have accomplished.
