Mike Patton with a new job? Not quite, although the Incubus vocals do sound a lot like Faith No More. They have wrongly been accused of copying Korn. Incubus has a sound that is fairly heavy but they also use many samples. A DJ is a permanent member scratching throughout. My favorite track is the funky "Magic Medicine". Incubus are able to inject adrenaline into a sometimes stale genre. Think of 311 back around their Grassroots stage. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is an album that fans would come back to over and over after the band decided to shoot for radio play on upcoming releases.

creatively, you can't get much better than "S C I E N C E", Just when you think they're going to slow down they buttonhook you and hit you in the face with raw guitar. This album is very creative wih a lot of samples, but you find yoursef repeating the samples over and over again. As far as Incubs taking a dive, I think they only became better. Just because they started getting airplay does't make their work a downhill progreess. Make yourself was one of their best albums. So was Morning View and Light Grenada. Every one of their albums is worth picking up. This album was tightly knit there. Great samples, lyrics and approprate guitar fillers. great running music

That's an awesome review Brian. Good work. I'm pulling S.C.I.E.N.C.E. off my shelf as soon as I get home today for another listen. You'll be interested to know that it's the only one I own. I thought Incubus took a steep dive downward after this album

Where does one start with such an industry changing album. Is it the deep rooted and progressive metal sound that mixes with skip beats and a Didgeridoo? Could it be 'cause this was most raw and the beginning chapters of what became a great songwriter (Brandon Boyd). I think grew a grey watching you procrastinate, being only one of many prime examples of intellect and melody synchronization to one of the most melodic forms of metal ever released, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. I guess Certain Shade of Green, is the most appealing of tunes to your truly. From the integrity of a young Boyd's vocals to the clarity of electric metal and a drowning yet clean percussion, Incubus hit seriously shot themselves in the foot here. Drawn in with diverse melody hybrid and lyrical twisting like the next track Favorite Things. "Too bad the things that make you mad are my favorite things", the chorus, verse, chorus formula steadies until a little over two minutes into the song, and the raw Incubus is a groove long forgotten as in comparison to the days of now. Speaking of groove, "Nebula" is quite the hi-speed throttle through the world of funk and progressive. With Boyd leading the lyrical content, moving from three o'clock on the first verse, issuing a story of one night progression all the while the kettle of this song is ready to whistle. Just after a finger picked solo of clean guitar, the guitars drums and vocals blow up, creating an endearing metal madness. Like something from the under-produced but impressively raw, Fungus Amungus quick skip beats by DJ Killmore, long dark, metallic arm strokes by Einziger (guitar) and Kenney (bass), and a strong chest of drums by truly an innovator of rock music known today, Jose Passillas. This guy can move from small jazz symbolic moves to an undercurrent of completely out of control natural drum explosions. But here's the gem, and what may have changed Incubus into the Incubust they are today. They tasted the sadness in contemporary rock, and were never the same again. This jazzed out, triangle spun ditty of a hard rock relaxation is what may in fact stick out the most. Maybe some acts are meant to progress to wuss rock...Certainly their style in Anti-Gravity (Summer Romance) would suggest if anyone deserves to wuss out its Incubus. From easy guitar rock to saxophone solo's and all the other clever mixing in between, this track created the monster known as Incubus. Other than the occasional intermission moment, and a terrifically funny secret track involving all sorts of randomness like like the guys poking fun at the The Karate Kid, or re-dramatizing an emergency room incident with their instruments like a movie score, its the closing track Calgone that absolutely set this record on fire. Story wise you're taken on a trip of one piece of bad luck leading to another. Read these lyrics even closer and you'll notice some odd stuff coming out of Boyd's mouth. Slowly triggered amongst scattered scratch beats, a symbol crawl, and a heart pounding bass line, Boyd eventually goes off, repeating over the chorus of funk metal... Woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, little bit less than nothing would go my way!!!. Absolutely the most drawn out roller coaster ride of story and song -a close runner up for the best track here- Calgone kicks into fifth gear from 1st several times. The lyrics are so odd and succumbing to a storyline of misfortune involving aliens and AAA (automotive club), I'll leave it to your research skills rather than quote it. Most of all... this CD has been so overplayed, scratched and lost for six months- rinse and repeat since 1997- that I was worried whether or not I could even get the review done without re-purchasing. That being the point my friends, I will repurchase once its stripped to the bone. Don't sleep on the this unforgettable blend of unique musicianship, voice samples and uncomparable writing any longer. Forget labeling this Rap-Rock, its just great combusting Metal and Funk.
