Chevelle - Point #1

Point #1 is yet another great album produced by the studio genius Steve Albini. Chevelle is still a very young band coming from the Chicago area. They still manage to get that crunchy, thick, wall of guitar sound though, managing to fit in some dynamic rhythms and cool harmonies while still maintaining the angst. Lead singer Pete Loeffler screams out the lyrics at times and then softens up and almost whispers. For people who enjoy dynamic rock like Tool you should definitely track this one down. Hopefully Point #1 will see a domestic release in Canada.

Its always nice to go back and read some of Dennis' old reviews, especially an indie classic like this. Chevelle Point # 1 was the first review I ever wrote. Damnit, I have been writing music reviews for 10 years almost to the day!

Here it is, my review of Point # 1 for a street team project I did. NO EDITING!
--------
When I first turned on the CD, the opening riff deservingly called "Open", came at me from all sides with heavy rhythmic tones and caught my attention immediately. The most important part of any album is arguably the first five seconds. Inside those first five seconds you decide on whether the disc is going to be a frisbee or a favorite.

Point #1 certainly grabs your attention from the get go! This Chicago brothers trio comes blazing with blitzful tones, and song arrangements that appeal to the bi-polar in all of us. You may find yourself wondering how a guitarist, drummer, and a bassist can combine to arrange this much raw power.

As the title track "Point #1" fades in and the singer (Pete Loeffler) steps up, suddenly youre assaulted by this feeling of refreshment. Just about anyone will begin making vocal comparisons to Maynard from Tool its only natural. But just as youre ready to label them as a Tool disciple they pull out, drop to d and the lead vocals break out into a scream that has yet to be duplicated.

The track "Mia" was first to receive airplay and got a fair reaction on most late night prospect radio shows.. My personal favorite track at this point would be "SMA, with "Skeptic" coming in at a close second (still five years later this rings true).

The only problem I found with the album was the tracks that are slated to be the be the singles seemed to be the shortest and arguably, the weakest with one exception; "Prove to You", which should send these guys right into the spotlight. While most of the album is spent at a hard level, there are moments in the album where they will take from a fast paced Days of the New jam, right back into a Deftones head release.

With a lot artists finding success filling the trends of the 7 string sound, its hard to go out on a limb and explore the population with your own sound. As much as these guys are similar to Tool, and Deftones they find their own click in a already bogged down market of simple one chord hard rock bands. Comparable to being paroled from the gut wrenching predictability of radio indigestion, Point #1 will set you free.
