The Streets is the result of many sleepless nights recording in the bedroom for Mike Skinner. The UK DJ/MC has been into hip-hop and garage with a hefty dose of drum and bass thrown in. The result is a hip hop album that is heavy on the garage style beats. It works very well, for all you skeptics. Every once and a while an artist comes along and gives a genre a kick in the ass. That just what Mike has done with his Streets project. Original Pirate Material sounds so fresh and new that it's hard to compare anything to it. The garage group Stanton Warriors have seen this and used The Streets' "Has It Come To This?"? on their amazing Stanton Sessions. The only British hip hop artist to even come close to The Streets is Roots Manuva and even he is in a different ball-park all together. It has something to do with Mike's vocal delivery. He is somewhere between rapping and singing in almost a conversational style. It's unique and very refreshing. If you are interested in what the garage hype from England is all about, you would be advised to check out The Streets. It is stronger than even some of the best compilations going.
