After Paul Westerberg finally laid down the Replacements to rest (following 1990’s All Shook Down) he could concentrate on songwriting as opposed to band politics. This is where a songwriter such as Westerberg deserves to be. His songwriting talent is so bloody original that there really isn’t many writers who even compare to Paul. On 14 Songs we get some songs that are fashioned like older Replacements stuff like one of the album highlights “Silver Naked Ladies�. The album opens up with the strongest song on the album called “Knockin on Mine� that really shows the listener what they are in for for the other 13 songs. Another one of my faves is the demo sounding “Black Eyed Susan� in which Westerberg sings a super catchy but low-key melody to a drum machine and a very faint guitar. “Things� could have been written for the Replacement’s Tim album. Some of the finer songwriting on 14 songs Westerberg actually slows down and enjoys the finer things and softer things. Sit back and throw on “Even Here We Are� and tell me that Westerberg is not one of the finest songwriters of our time.
