Who would have thought that Soul Coughing fans would look North to Canada for their fix of rap-rock-poetry-politic statements? That’s just what they should do now that Warsawpack is making their moves. Gross Domestic Product is a very strong debut album that reaches to Soul Coughing for inspiration but extend from there to create a very unique sounding music. Warsawpack is a band that you can listen to in the background and just nod to the awesome rhythms or you can listen to every lyric that Lee Raback spits out. They lyrics are well thought out and with a name like Warsawpack, who wouldn’t see the political nature of this band? The music is jazzy and hip hop-y. The band jams out in spaces and pulls together when needed. They reach to very modern techniques such as DJ scratching but don’t have a problem laying back and doing an instrumental (the flute infected “Lotus Position�). The music ends up being somewhat dark but very accessible. Hip Hop fans would find comfort in Warsawpack too.
